In this picture, Jim is shown hugging Huck. I think this picture expresses the compassionate and caring side of him, even though he is a big guy and could be seen as very scary and intimidating. It also shows the somewhat protective side of him. He cares for Huck, and therefor feels the need to watch over him and protect the young boy. He has children, so this shows the maternal side of him.

Not similair to description (Slide 4) -

I think this picture, like many of the pictures, shows Jim in the shadow of the white man, or in this case Huck, who is standing in front of him. He does not seem very caring or compassionate in this picture, it seems like the picture is focusing more on Huck. Jim also does not seem very large in the picture, which he is.

Which image most faithfully illustrates the novel's text?  How do Mark Twain's words represent Jim - as more of a character, or a caricature?

I would say that the picture on slide 25 would represent the novel's text the best. It shows the relationship that Jim and Huck have with eachother, which is a close one. They both care for eachother, and this picture represents that well. Mark Twain's words make Jim seem like more of a charicature, because he makes Jim sound very silly and childish, which he is not. As we get into the book a little more, Jim's compassion and spirituality is shown and expressed, and it seems that Mark Twain is trying to tell the readers that Jim isn't just some dopey slave, but that there is more to him than that. He has feelings too, like any other person.
